General Director
Dear Colegio El Camino Community,
As you know, we are a very unique school in Baja California Sur. We are the first and only school in our region that provides some of the world´s most renowned and exclusive educational programs and standards of quality.
In a 2-year period between June of 2012- April 2014 we were able to achieve the lofty status as an International Baccalaureate School for the High School Diploma Program and as a member of high standing with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools AdvancED standards of quality.
We are very proud to announce that we are now the first and only IB Primary Years Program school authorized by the IBO just this past month. Congratulations go out to everyone, parents, students, staff and teachers! A job well done!
In addition to the implementation of these international vanguard programs and standards, El Camino has also developed an ongoing school wide improvement plan addressing facilities and resources as well.
In the last five years we have been able to:
Refurbish the science lab
Equip our Computer Lab with the latest generation of MAC computers,
Build a playground area for elementary
Build a cafeteria
Build a shading structure over our soccer field
Install a new outdoor learning space with shading where the old Palapa was located
Open an art room to support the expanded arts program
Install new electrical and high speed fiber optic cabling
We are very proud to announce that 2 more projects are currently underway at Camino and one more about to start.
- We have expanded the library to include a second floor and a media room and are going to build an outdoor Reading area this summer. A sincere thanks goes out to the Student Council, The 2016 2017 & 2017 2018 Parent Society for their continued support in fundraising.
- We are building a Green Playground Area in the Kindergarten after receiving a generous donation from Juan Diaz Rivera and Leslie Bost that has financed Phase 1. If you would like to participate in Phase 2 please contact us as we provide tax deductible receipts and promotional opportunities for your businesses.
- As you know Hurricane Newton damaged the shading on our soccer field and unfortunately the insurance does not cover such damages, however we are about to install a new retractable system and are very grateful to IGY Marinas who has sponsored the entire project! A very special thanks to both Mr. Darren Carey and Mr. Mario Rios, who helped make the sponsorship possible with IGY Marinas.
Our sincere gratitude and congratulations to everyone! If you are interested and would like to participate in any of these projects please contact me directly, your school director.
Regards,

IB PYP
Dear Community Camino,
As every month it is a pleasure to address you. As coordinator of the Primary Years Program I am delighted to share with you that the International Baccalaureate (IB) recognizes and authorizes our school to offer the Primary Years Program (IB PYP) as an IB World School. Thank you all for the trust placed in each of the teachers and administrators of preschool and primary to take the first step in the construction of this project.
As an IB World School we are committed to continue working in favor of this educational community and each of our students who are the future of our country. These are the first steps to make our children better able to contribute to build a better and more peaceful world where respect and acceptance of the cultural differences that enrich our world prevail.
I congratulate all the teachers, administrative staff, students and families at our school who have chosen the PYP and strive to make visible the attributes of the profile of our learning community.
If you wish to review the recognition of our school, you can do so by entering this address http://www.ibo.org/en/school/049811

Sanitary Towel Dispenser
We want to congratulate our Student Council!
This year they worked really hard on the Library project, but also they just donated a sanitary towel dispenser that is already in place and working.
We want to give a special thank you to Ms. Ryta García Aranda, mother of Emiliano Sobrino, for purchasing the towel dispenser in Mexico City and taking the time to coordinate the transportation, which we know must have not been an easy task.
Thank you all!

School Library Re-Opening
“If it were a book, I would like to be a library book so I could be taken home by all kinds of children”
– Cornelia Funke
“I always tell people that I became a writer not because I went to school but because my mother took me to the library. I wanted to become a writer so I could see my name in the chip catalog ”
– Sandra Cisneros
Since the day the Library closed its doors in November 15th, 2016 the Library Expansion Project had already started. Students, teachers and administrative staff had anticipated expectations of the result of this project, which is a product of collective effort and cooperation of the community.
Weeks and months went by… and every day in the hallways of the school the students asked me: “When are they going to open the Library?” For some the answer was satisfactory, however, for most of them to hear that it would be ready in a few months. It became an immense wait.
And as the well-known saying goes: “There is no date that is not reached or a deadline that is not met”, so on Thursday, May 4, 2017, the Library opened again. We welcomed students who with such enthusiasm waited for months to research, read and take home new materials.
At the time of the opening, elementary students made large queues to apply for their books. Many looked for bibliographic resources, some read them on the spot, and most of them waited patiently for their turn to check out and take home. It was an incredible day to share with the students!
“No matter how busy you think you are, you must find time to read or surrender to self-chosen ignorance”
– Confucius
“Read and you will lead, do not read and you will be led.”
– Santa Teresa de Jesus

MAP and CPAA Evaluations
Colegio El Camino conducted two evaluations during the 2016-2017 school year to asses the academic progress in students in K2, K3, 1st and 2nd Grade with the CPAA evaluation and 3rd to 6th grade with MAP evaluations.
During the first weeks of May, parents and group teachers will hold meetings to inform you about the academic progress of your child and some strategies that you can implement at home, according to the results of these evaluations.

Congratulations to all teachers from each and every section! The collective participation and collaboration make a significant and long-lasting learning in our students lives.
The IB World magazine shares an interview with Peter Docker, an IB lecturer in Barcelona in October 2016, explaining how IB teachers can discover their “why” and help students do the same.
According to Docker, the discovery of the “why” is fundamental to professional achievement and performance improvement. The “why” is a superior purpose, a cause or belief that motivates us to do what we do. “When you know why you teach, you can not contain your passion,” says Docker. This passion is contagious and will inspire students.
“When we know why we do what we do, we are more likely to take risks and less likely to give up when difficulties arise”, adds Docker.
“If we are clear about our ‘why’ and how it fits into the overall higher purpose of the environment in which we work – the community, it gives us courage to continue, overcome difficulties and struggle when surrendering may be the easiest option. And this is because we have a more global vision. ”
Happy Teachers Day!
Technology
Technology has had a great impact on the structure of Camino this spring. New paradigms of communication, work and study teams have been created allowing us to be more efficient and precise in the tasks like manufacturing and development. However, we must take into account that human nature cannot be replaced: life experiences should not revolve around our technological devices since it is not the same to have a chat via the web that a cup of coffee with a friend face to face. In the same way the intuition of a researcher can not be replaced in any way.
Let us also analyze that today amazing works are performed without the need for sophisticated machinery when catastrophes occur even when the best technology is available. Therefore, it is indispensable to always keep in mind that man should cultivate and grow in spiritual values considering technology as an ally to carry it out.
