Gazette June-July 2017

General Director

Dear Camino Community

I want to thank each and every community member for their hard work and efforts and a very successful year! I wish you all a very restful and safe holiday season and look forward to seeing all our returning families and all of our new families.

I would like to share the following important announcements!

Congratulations to the graduating classes of 2017! A very special congratulation to the second generation of High School IB candidates. We are very proud to announce that we had 9 full IB diplomas recipients! That quadrupled our results from last year and we expect even better results in the future. All of those who did not receive the full IB diploma did receive certificates in many of the subjects and each and every one of them are better prepared for University life and beyond because of the program and the school. Our thanks and congratulations!

Change is a part of life and we are subject to change. We see this change always as an opportunity to improve upon our current successes.

We wish to bid a fond farewell to Mr Gustavo Mejia and Mr Walter Nagles who have given our school so much in their respective sections in implementing the IB Programs. Both have resigned and are in the process of seeking new and exciting opportunities in the IB World. We wish them both all the best!

We would like to welcome Maria Ines Mayaudon as the new PYP Coordinator. She comes highly trained and experienced as an IB PYP coordinator from Venezuela and will be joined by her two children and husband. She is a workshop leader, evaluator and IB trained teacher. We will introduce you to her in August. Welcome Maria Ines!

As well, we have promoted Mr Ricardo Fumachi to take on the role of IBDP coordinator ( do not worry though, he will still be teaching Spanish in the High School!) and welcome Mr Santiago Leal as our new Middle School and High School Coordinator who worked in the same position for 8 years prior to my arrival. The division of the position of IBDP coordinator and MS/HS coordinator into two roles will enhance both our academic successes and the smooth operation of the administrative aspects with Mr Santiago Leal. Welcome and congratulations to you both.

Finally we have had some staff members who will not be joining us next year and wish them all the best in their careers and life. I am very pleased to announce that full staffing has been acquired. We have hired a few local and national teachers who will be receiving training in the IB in August, but also a fine group of highly experienced IB teachers!

One exciting piece of news is the hiring of new High School math teachers!

Mr Carlos Cortez, a highly experienced IB Math teacher and Coordinator will be joining us in August with his wife and daughter as the Math Coordinator and Math teacher. He will be giving classes in 9th grade and also the advanced level math courses in 10th, 11th and 12th grade while Mr Santiago Leal, our new MS/HS coordinator will be offering mathematical studies courses at 10th 11th and 12th grade. Mr Fredy Toledo will continue to support the improving math results in 7th and 8th grades. Mr Cortez´s knowledge of the IB math approach and guiding the team is a great step forward in terms of our math program.

We will be sharing all the information regarding all new staff members in August!

We look forward to a very exciting year and will see you all on August 21st.

Warm Regards,

10 recommendations to help children easily adapt to Elementary School

One of the biggest changes faced by both children and parents is the first year of Elementary School. Elementary education brings a greater emphasis on the development of cognitive skills such as reading, writing, basic general knowledge and mathematics. Children also go from sharing spaces and tables with some classmates to individual desks and have to interact during lunch and recess with students of other grades and ages.

Therefore, we share these recommendations that will help you to adapt in a friendly manner:

  • Make positive comments about the new classroom and new classmates.
  • Allow the child to be present when purchasing the new school supplies so they feel more involved.
  • Review new textbooks and work material so they get familiar with the new tools.
  • Be patient, children cannot mature overnight to become a more efficient student.
  • We must keep in mind that children have their own learning process. We should never compare them with other children and, much less, scold them because they do not achieve goals at the same time as the others.
  • Being in constant communication with the teacher is fundamental to be able to follow up the whole period of adaptation and the coupling to the new activities and rules of the classroom.
  • It is also very important to talk about the rules of the house, and explain that in Elementary there are new rules and above all, make them feel comfortable and give them security to enjoy the new knowledge they will acquire.
  • Remain in constant communication with your children and ask them how they feel about the new changes.

Our kids will be visiting the Elementary section to help with adaptation to the change. They will have lunch with the first graders, who are their previous classmates and will meet teachers and Elementary section coordinator.

Elementary

Everybody can achieve success, but only a few dare to try. Natalia Peña Gutiérrez did it, and her participation in the 2017 Children’s Knowledge Olympiad was celebrated May 20th in the city of La Paz.

Dear students and teachers,

We have reached the end of one more year of happiness, hopes, gratitude and strength; we have completed another cycle and reached a new step. I thank you all for your support and effort in what we do and the team we make.

Today our school is quiet, only the shouts, the laughter of all of us, that united by a feeling of brother and sisterhood, are left in the walls of classrooms, courtyards and on the courts of our school.

Many thanks to all teachers for the love and comprehension demonstrated to our students, rest assured they will represent our institution greatly, an institution that has cared for them like a bird would care for their babies, protecting them from adversities.

“School Poems, Gil Editores”

We dismiss the students who finish their Elementary education; it is a moment of great emotion that reflects the positive commitment they put into their elementary studies. In their young minds they have already recorded all the value of what it is to have preparation and knowledge. Also recorded are the hours of joy that they lived in the school, where their antics were shared with their classmates.

Students, parents and teachers we wish you a well-deserved holiday!

We remind you that August 21st is Back to School day.

English books will be sold at the school.

IB PYP

Learning in the Primary Years Programme is achieved through a continuous process of inquiry, action and reflection: an interaction generated by questioning practical work and thinking[i].

Inquiry as a continuous learning process is driven by teachers in a structured way in order to strengthen students’ learning and their continuous efforts to understand their person and the world around them. Inquiry is a process of construction that is achieved through collaboration and work together; Each unit of inquiry is a valuable opportunity for our students to develop their skills and put their knowledge into practice, the inquiry is generated at any time in life and can be developed in different ways: individual, in a couple or group. Physical spaces and resources are vital for our students to broaden their learning, strengthen their understanding and show an active attitude of collaboration and continuous learning.

The PYP invites all members of the learning community to continue to learn through the pedagogy of inquiry. Recall, that being a natural process the inquiry can be presented from observation, manipulation, questioning, discussion and information search.

In order to continue expanding the spaces of inquiry for our students, we are happy to have in service our Center of Inquiry at the School Library, which has a specific classroom of inquiry where the students collaborate together during different moments of their learning. The center of inquiry is open during school hours and is in charge of Miss Nancy Mendoza who continues to work to make this place a learning space.

We want to thank the academic community the joined efforts to make this project a reality for our students. We are positive that everyone will benefit greatly from this learning place.

Our next challenge is the acquisition of bibliographic materials, which we will achieve as we work together so that the entire community has access to quality resources.

CAS Program

InterCAS 2017 in Chile, October 8th and 15th

At INTERCAS, students from different IB schools from all over the Americas gather to conduct and share activities related to the CAS program.

From the region of “Los Lagos” in Osorno City in the South of Chile, the host school Instituto Aleman de Osorno prepares to receive students with projects from all over the region.

The idea of this INTERCAS is to offer the opportunity to participate in this event to approximately 300 students and teachers, so we have looked for projects with different approaches.

Each group will participate in two different projects, one lasting three days and one lasting a day. Short-term projects are oriented towards environmental care, creativity and physical activity (River water analysis / Biogas plant maintenance / Trekking / Painting of camping ceilings with native birds).

Long-term projects are service oriented, but also bring together elements of activity and creativity. These include, for example, the construction or set-up of social venues, construction of playgrounds for rural schools or camp, enable footpaths, construction of gazebo, arrangement or construction of a greenhouse, provision of a chapel, confection of a botanical garden.

Camino students that will participate in the INTERCAS

Ivette Torres
Aritzi Baños
Louise Hartman 11th grade
María Fátima Díaz 10th grade

This will be an incredible experience for our students!

Library

We are almost two months into the re-opening of the school’s library, the center of inquiry and the attendance to both has increased in large numbers since opening day. Frequently, students and teachers share their thoughts and gratitude.

“This place inspires me to study, I can feel at peace and I am eager to get work done”

Students take time at lunch break to read, study and inquire following the librarian’s instructions. “No food allowed in the library, you must keep quiet or maintain moderate volume, use your school ID to check out books and respect others work space!”

Teachers attend with their students to conduct investigations, analysis and reflection on units of inquiry.

My deepest gratitude to Diego Felipe Fumachi Montes from 8th grade who by his own conviction decided to support us after school by updating the system to control library books.

Congratulations to our Library users who are constantly checking out books to take home:

Psychology

A cycle ends and new experiences begin, the enthusiasm of the first day in elementary or middle school and seeing how our children have grown is emotional, the time of the farewell arrives, farewell teachers, directors and school.

The preschoolers will jump to elementary, feeling great and self-sufficient makes them live this experience with security and emotion; Growing means becoming more independent, developing skills for new challenges, goals and purposes, it will be a great moment to be accompanied in this stage of the audacity, joy and serenity of dad and mom to share this experience together.

The excitement of the first day of school in elementary can never be forgotten, looking at your child so little with such a big back pack while he takes his first steps into a new stage it’s always a great experience. Now the same little children have finished elementary school and have become teenagers who show how much they can do on their own now, how much they have matured, their skills and experiences to advance into the next stage in life; Middle School. They feel both eager and afraid to experience this new stage in life, however they will still need your support, your hugs and above all your advice to keep moving forward.

Congratulations for being present in every stage of their lives! Your support as mother and father is invaluable.

Technology

Let’s all admit, we have got used to leaving our electronics plugged in, even when they are turned off or in stand-by mode for long periods of time. When was the last time you used that blueray or dvd player? What about the stereo, or microwave? All of these devices consume energy even when they are turned off or on stand-by.

It is crucial that we keep all electronic devices turned off while we are not using them, this will help us to reduce energy consumption up to 10%, which translates in savings both economic and environmental. This helps to extend the life of the appliance by keeping it at a lower temperature.

Disconnecting your appliances or electronic devices at home and work generates a clean environment free of energy vampires.

Sports

We want to congratulate our Girl’s middle and high school Soccer teams for their achievements in this 2016-2017 school year by becoming the champions in the Liga de Futbol 7 Intercolegial Picacho-McGregor

Our high school team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament winning the final by penalty rounds against Colegio McGregor. Madison Shuller and Mariham Sánchez scored during the game, while Sofía García and Fathima Huerta scored in the penalty round.

In middle school we played the final against Colegio McGregor, in the penalty rounds Sofía García and Sabrina Montes de Oca scored goals. Player of the game goes to our goalie, Alondra Zuñiga, she blocked 2 shots which allowed us to win!

Our student Mariham Sánchez was awarded as the scoring champion in both categories. We are all proud of you guys!

We also want to congratulate our Tocho team for their sub championship in the Liga Cabo Flag football. Unfortunately we lost the championship by a touchdown. Congratulations all for this achievement!

Thank you to all students and parents for their commitment and support in our sport academies, we say good-bye to this school year full of great and positive experiences. We wish you a restful break.
