How can you raise creative children?

Step One: step aside, suggests a writer for The New York Times, who insists in the need of letting your child free so they can pursue their interests.

”I came to the theory of relativity by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition,” Albert Einstein once said. His mother enrolled him in violin lessons at age 5, but he was not attracted to it. His love for music blossomed years later, through Mozart´s sonatas. Love is a better teacher than a sense of duty,” he said.

The story is told in an article in The New York Times, entitled How to raise a creative child. According to its author, psychologist Adam Grant, you cannot schedule a person to be innovative. And he warns those who are parents, if you want your children to sow the seeds of creative thinking, “you need to let them pursue their own passions, not yours.”

The professor also argues that gifted children rarely become geniuses who change the world. As adults, the whiz kids tend to be experts in their fields but not revolutionary creators, and not because they lack social and emotional skills. What happens is that these kids aspire to earn the admiration of their parents and teachers, rather than to be original. “Practice makes perfect, but does not generate innovation,” concludes Grant.

So how do you educate a child to be creative? A study cited by the newspaper compared two families of school communities, and found that the most creative children had fewer rules than the average home. “By limiting the number of rules, parents encourage children to think for themselves,” suggests author.

While these parents encourage their children to pursue excellence and success also they encourage them to find the passion and joy at work. “His children were free to discover their own interests and that made them flourish as creative adults.”

IB Primary Years Programme

On several occasions we have mentioned the transdisciplinary themes that make up the Primary Years Programme Educational Model we have even shared that from this same themes we develop the Inquiry Programme for Colegio El Camino. Every 5 weeks you will receive a report card by grade according to the transdisciplinary theme your child has worked on in those 5 weeks.

There are 6 total transdisciplinary themes for the Primary Years Programme:
– Who we are
– Where are we in time and space
– How we express ourselves
– How the world works
– How do we organize ourselves
– How we share the planet

So, what is a transdisciplinary theme? Why do owe develop inquiry units form them?
Transdisciplinary themes have the characteristic of being common aspects that are essential to human experience; they are significant for everyone, for students of all cultures. They are developed in each academic year looking to deeply explore the curricular content and with increasing depth. In this way, teachers will seek in the future to avoid repeating the same themes each year.

In conclusion: A transdisciplinary theme represents shared human experiences.

A good example is the subject taken by our 2nd grade students in their third unit of inquiry “Where are we in time and space” the core idea is “Our cultural heritage determines our customs and traditions.”

In this unit, students had the chance to inquire about customs and traditions from all over the world. As a part of the inquiry process they were assigned to investigate their origin and the way their customs develops over time. They also conducted a comparison between personal and national customs and traditions, revealing that there are similarities in different celebrations according to the cultural geo location.

At the end of the unit some concussions drawn from the students are:
– “one of the reasons there are different celebrations is because of the diversity of people living in together in one place, but their essence is still present”
– “Traditions sometimes change because cultures get mixed together”
– “Customs and traditions depend on the geographical location of a place, it is inherited by our ancestors, nothing happens overnight and it continuously changes with time.

It is important to mention that students discovered the diversity of expressions because of the different cultures around the world.

Psychology

We had the honor of receiving Psychologist Lupita Carbajal in our Learning in Family Workshop, Lupita shared with us the subject “Independent Children, Happy Parents” We want to thank all Preschool parents who attended.

What to do to help a child become independent?
– Give them options to choose from.
– Allow them to think, encourage them to do so.
– Give them emotional and physical space.
– Allow them to process on their own any new experiences.
– Tel them how to do things in a clear and specific manner.
– Teach them to look for solutions.
– Allow them to explore, but always set clear limits and supervise them.
– The easiest way of learning is games and routine.
– Allow them to help in the easy tasks at home.
If they are feeling down, encourage them to overcome the feeling.
