Colegio El Camino is proud to be the first and only private High School in Cabo San Lucas and the Baja to be accredited with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, a two year program in the 11th and 12th grades. We are also a fully certified school with the Direccion General de Bachillerato (DGB), the high school division of the national Mexican Education Authority SEP. Students who graduate Colegio El Camino will receive the official SEP High School diploma and if they qualify, will also receive an International Baccalaureate Diploma.
This prestigious designation provides even further opportunities for admission, credits and scholarships in both
national and international universities. The philosophy to teaching in High School is trans-disciplinary in nature, meaning students are given the opportunity to apply what they learn across subject areas in real-life settings and is based on the IB learner profile. The learner profile is a set of 10 attributes valued by IB World Schools that we believe will help our students become responsible members of local, international and global communities. This rigorous university level curriculum is unique from other high school programs because in addition to the subject area studies the Diploma Programme requires students to engage in 3 mandatory core components; the extended essay, theory of knowledge and CAS community service projects.
“The extended essay asks students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the DP subjects they are studying. The world studies extended essay option allows students to focus on a topic of global significance which they examine through the lens of at least two DP subjects.
Theory of knowledge develops a coherent approach to learning that unifies the academic disciplines. In this course on critical thinking, students inquire into the nature of knowing and deepen their understanding of knowledge as a human construction. The creativity, activity, service component (CAS) involves students in a range of activities alongside their academic studies throughout the Diploma Programme. Creativity encourages students to engage in the arts and creative thinking.
Activity seeks to develop a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Service with the community offers a vehicle for a new learning with academic value. The 10th grade program reflects the same teaching and learning philosophy in the IB program and helps students prepare for the successful completion of the IB Diploma in the 11th and 12th grades.
Schedule:
School Day from 7:25 am. to 3:00 pm.
Students attend 6 classes a day and receive recess/lunch breaks of 20 and 50 minutes
Students have 30 classes per week and the students move from class to class throughout the day. This approach allows classrooms to be set up and prepared for the subject and gives students the opportunity to allow their minds and bodies to prepare for the next subject area as well as get a well-deserved moment to stretch their legs on the way to the next class. Our school offers educational trips and experiential learning to high school students to enhance their learning experiences beyond the classroom. Students also participate in elective classes where students from 7th through 12th grade attend a mixed grade level workshop of their choosing that includes workshops like Student Council, Living Science Lab, MUN Club, Spanish and English Conversation, Chess among others.
Adolescence is a stage in life with challenges and moments of doubt, Colegio El Camino understands this and provides support and guidance to our high school students through our Mentoring Program and College and Career Counseling Program. The Mentoring Program connects students with trained mentors who support them as they experience the challenges during this stage of life. This program provides every student with a trained mentor who may be a teacher or staff member who takes time to listen to him or her on a one on one basis. They can meet during arranged times during class time, at recess or before/after school.
The College and Career Counselor meets with each grade level group once a week to prepare students for their future studies in college or university. This program includes aptitude assessments, self-interest inventories, possible future career choices, personal portfolio development and support for the university application process including scholarship applications.
Our afternoon Academic Academies run from 3:30 to 4:30 pm and your child can attend as many of the classes as you like during the week. They include, Math, Physics, Chemistry Support, English and Spanish Language Support and Homework Club in the Computer Lab.
