History

The name “El Camino” draws inspiration from a line in a poem by Antonio Machado: “Walk where there is no road, for you create the road by going.” Faithful to its name, Colegio El Camino continues to create new ways for students to learn and prosper as they navigate their journey in life.

September 15, 1983 THE DREAM BECOMES REALITY

The dream that would become Colegio El Camino became reality thanks to the Diaz Rivera, Coppola, and Parr families. Guided by Manuel Sierra Rosales, the first director, and a dedicated team of six educators, the school was founded in 1983 with fewer than 10 students.

September 22, 1986 OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL IS ESTABLISHED

Three years later, the middle school was established under the direction of Sisters of Conception Nandino Diaz.

September 1989 OPENING THE FIRST HIGH SCHOOL IN LOS CABOS

In response to community needs, Colegio El Camino took a significant step by establishing the first high school in Los Cabos, duly registered with the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP).

1991-1996 THE FIRST GENERATIONS GRADUATE

A few years later, Dr. Carmen Vazquez de Echeveste assumed the role of General Director at Colegio El Camino, where she led all three educational school levels. Under her leadership, the institution celebrated the graduation of the inaugural generation of students!

1999-2008 DESIGNING AND INTEGRATING NEW EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Professor Cecilia Etchegaray joined the school as General Director. To enhance educational offerings, the Board enlisted the expertise of the consulting group Almaguer Asesores, S.C. in 2006. This collaboration resulted in the design and integration of new educational programs aligned with our foundational values of bilingualism, leadership development, and social responsibility.

2008 ENHANCING OUR CAMPUS FOR OUR YOUNGEST STUDENTS

M. C. M. Julieta Espinoza Trasviña took over as General Director and created a Nursery School and Preschool section comprising three grades.

2014 ATTAINING IB AUTHORIZATION FOR THE IB DIPLOMA 

Under the leadership of current General Director Heath Sparrow, Colegio El Camino attained accreditation from SACS Advanced as well as from the International Baccalaureate Program, which granted authorization for the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (DP), making us the first and only IB school in all of Baja California Sur.

2017 RECEIVING ACCREDITATION FOR THE IB PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAM

Three years later, General Director Heath Sparrow and the Primary Years Program (PYP) team attained accreditation from the International Baccalaureate Program, authorizing Camino to implement the PYP program for our kinder and elementary students.

March 1, 2023 BECOMING AN IB CONTINUUM SCHOOL

In 2023, Colegio El Camino received accreditation from the International Baccalaureate Program, securing authorization to implement the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP). With all three programs now authorized, Colegio El Camino proudly joined the ranks of only 25 IB Continuum schools in Mexico.

Marking a significant milestone, Colegio El Camino celebrated its 40th Anniversary under the theme “Celebrating 40 years opening pathways and building the future.”
