Camino Gazette January to March 2018

General Director

Dear Camino Community,

We hope you had some rest and relaxation over the spring vacations. We at Camino hope you were able to spend quality time with your friends and family.

Speaking of rest, we have some important information and suggestions regarding how you and your children can get better rest and how digital devices affect that ability. We hope this helps!

Beyond the obvious benefits of using digital devices for online research and reading there is some research showing other benefits of online activity.

Possible Benefits of online activity are:

  • Although young people are having less face to face interaction they are rarely alone or isolated and feel more at ease
  • “Online, social presence and intimacy levels can be controlled…face-to-face communication online may increase self-consciousness and reduce social anxiety, which could facilitate pro-social behavior and enhance online friendship formation” (Morahan-Martin and Schumacher).
  • Development of neural circuitry in young people allows for spurts of intense concentration: “many [young people] are developing neural circuitry that is customized for rapid and incisive spurts of directed concentration” (Manfield).
  • video gaming can lead to improvements in performance on various cognitive tasks, from visual perception to sustained attention, and that gaming can lead to “marked increases in the speed of information processing” (Horstman,).

However, there is a large amount of research and a majority of neuroscientists who believe that the overuse of online activity is harming children and can;

  • lead to the deterioration in a child’s ability to read people’s facial expressions and understand emotional context (Child and Vorgan).
  • Result in less interaction with other kids outside of school, and according to developmental psychologist Dr. Peter Gray, children who do not interact much with other kids have a higher likelihood of becoming aggressive and selfish adults (Horstman).
  • Reduce children´s ability to communicate with others in a face-to-face manner. “Kids are spending so much time communicating through technology that they’re not developing basic communication skills” (Johnson).
  • affect sleep and contribute to chronic fatigue

In a study 90% of people in the U.S. admit to using a technological device during the hour before bed. Using electronic devices before bedtime can;

  • be physiologically and psychologically stimulating and can adversely affect your sleep.
  • delay your body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm), and suppress the release of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin, and make it more difficult to fall asleep.
  • delay the onset of REM sleep, reduce the total amount of REM sleep, and compromise alertness the next morning. Over time, these effects can add up to a significant, chronic deficiency in sleep.

TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS

  1. Create a digital curfew for the family, turn off all electronic devices for the night. Set the curfew for one or two hours before bed,—the earlier in the evening, the better, but whatever feels realistic.
  2. Try reading an old-fashioned, printed book under lamplight (as opposed to bright overhead lighting) is a great choice. And using an e-ink e-reader (like the Kindle Paperwhite, as opposed to the Kindle Fire) is also a good idea, because it doesn’t produce the same type of blue light that a smartphone or tablet would.
  3. Limit the amount of time on devices to no more than two hours a day.
  4. Be clear about when use is permitted. Predictable routines protect the peace. Once negotiations cease and rules are concrete, people adjust to reality and protest less.
  5. Encourage time in the natural world. “Play outside”.
  6. Have conversations face to face, over the counter, in the car, at a meal with friends and family. About what? dreams, current events, songs, things you think about…
  7. Find things to do that require in person, non-tech activity. Try eating a meal without cell phones. Going to the beach without the ipad, going for a family walk without the iphone playing Spotify and listen to the sounds of nature for 30 minutes.
  8. Don’t feel guilty if you have conflicts with your child to get the above to happen
  9. Don’t give in because of complaints of boredom. At first there will be “nothing to do”, then there will be “something to do” Authentic engagement with your children will bring laughter and joy but you must get into it.
  10. Don’t fall for the “It’s an emergency! I have to have my phone. “Don’t worry if you cannot affect this right away. Remember Rome was not built in a day.

These past months we had several events in our school, here’s a recap.

In February we had the traditional Crazy Week, Wednesday was Pajama day, Thursday was Comics day and Friday Ridiculous day.

Kinder 3 had a field trip to the “Galería del Cerrito” where they saw a work of art made by their Arts teacher Alfredo Ochoa. This was part of their inquiry line, “how we express ourselves” to understand how we can communicate through visual arts.

The Huerto or orchard has been a total success; the little ones love to plant seeds and watch them grow and also they have enjoyed some cucumbers with lime and chili as well as a cherry tomato salad.

We celebrated Valentine’s Day, a celebration full of joy and love. Parents were able to send serenades to their children through the Student Council and students exchanged treats as presents. As always our teachers helped with excitement and love.

Hawks´ Day was an incredible day for all of us! We had lots of fun and our students were able to practice some of the IB profile attributes. They were determined in competition in defending their house color, demonstrated solidarity with their fellow teammates and supported each other as they cheered throughout the day.

The winning house was the Silver Hawks and the prize was a visit to McDonald’s to celebrate with hotcakes and playtime.

Kinder 3 carried out the annual LEXIUM evaluation and the K2 and K3 took the CPAA academic evaluation; the results will be delivered in the next quarter of progress reports.

The Spring Festival also took place. Our students from K3 performed “ The Grufalo” as well as a dance, K2 Bees, K1 “Bunnies” and Nursery school “Little Birds”. Everyone danced and had a great time.

As a closure to the unit of inquiry “How we express ourselves” students of K1 had a talent show where they gave us sample of the different ways they learned to express their emotions through art. They showed how painting is a form of communication to express emotions and feelings as well as dance, ballet, music and poetry.

K2 students presented their closure of the unit of inquiry “How we express ourselves” with a Family Shield, which they explained in detail to their fellow students.

Egg hunting was a total success celebrating Easter and that is how we started our school break.

Upcoming events in April are Math Fair and Children’s Day! We will keep you posted.

Students are continuously working in collaboration, which helps them socialize and share their experiences while they wait their turn to participate.

Students from 3rd Grade had a field trip to the Casa Dorada Hotel where they reinforced their learning skills by meeting new people, listening to their stories, asking questions. The objective of this visit was to understand economic activity as part of their inquiry unit “How we organize”.

IB PY Primary Years Programme

Current Education
By Oswaldo Laprea Rodríguez

Most of our educational systems are anachronistic; they were created in the past. In a different time, to respond to individual and collective needs and challenges different from the current ones, which has generated great limitations in the criteria of teaching.

Current educational models are based on production and not on creation. The current education is standardized and linear, without nuances or chords a discolored education and without motivation.

Education was invented for an industrial society based on mass production, but the changes have occurred so fast that a large gap has been created between the real needs of each individual and society in general.

Our current world lives on services and information, where the real driving force is ideas, creativity and not production.

Education must be synonymous with inspiration, generating a particular motivation in each one of our young students, which leads them to feel at ease and allows them to develop their true potential and imagination to the fullest.

We learn by doing and when we get excited we transform the school campus into an infinite space of social and emotional learning that empowers the life of each individual and that stimulates creativity, passion, talent and interaction.

We all have a talent, therefore we must build environments where everyone can find the necessary inputs and inspiration to develop our imagination and thus consolidate our emotional skills that allow us to understand the true role we play in society.

Many of us finish our studies and travel through life without knowing our true talent.

Education must be focused on what our children really like. We must motivate them, become that inexhaustible light that allows them to develop their skills to the maximum.

In short, we educate our children for a world that does not exist, where systems and actions work and adapt in a very different way to what we have taught them.

Our children and teenagers are like space rockets, big, powerful, very sophisticated. They reach unprecedented speeds, sometimes difficult to manage, so these ships need very good pilots and excellent control systems, sometimes they are launched without evidence, so they also need good preparation and good programming, with a fuel that allows them to have the proper ignition.

We have to innovate, create and above all allow them to participate and design new teaching and learning strategies.

If we truly understand and believe that we must modify our systems and methods to educate in a truly prosperous and fruitful way for all, then we will begin to take a big step towards building a fuller life, and much more according to our needs as a person and as a society.

To educate is to inspire and through that inspiration allow us to develop our creativity and emotion to the maximum.

To promote this type of education at El Camino through the IB PYP Programme we have been working on diverse inquiry, promoting expression, creativity and development of experiences for life.

In Pre School we worked with “How we express ourselves”. In K1 the group had an internal talent show where students learnt to express their emotions through art, singing and dancing.

K2 created symbols and signs that represented the things of life that they enjoy the most like games, colors and flowers among others.

K3 Students were introduced to several artists and their techniques and inspiration for their creations. They visited a gallery to understand how arts merge with a specific purpose. Students from Pre School demonstrated boldness by standing up in front of other students and parents to share their feelings through art.

In Elementary, inquiries have been diverse and supported by talks and field trips that enrich their connections with life. 1st grade is currently working with professions, they have been able to interview staff at El Camino to understand their activities. 2nd Grade is working on sensitizing students for social action and polish the solidarity attribute. 3rd Grade is inquiring in Cabo’s economy. To create a meaningful experience they visited the Organic Market and the Casa Dorada Hotel reinforcing the fact that each community work as a team to be more productive. 4th Grade did lab practices to corroborate the effect of color in materials. 5th Grade continues with the project “Care for the world” and we had a visit from Zero Group with a very interesting talk about conservation. 6th Grade students built murals with information gathered from several sources, they are inquiring about the use of communication through social media. Strengthening the “Strong communicator” attribute.

Students from 4th and 5th Grade analyzed the attributes of the profile “Community and Learning” they did an auto evaluation and were able to conduct a tripartite meeting, sharing their strengths and challenges with their parents in the process of International Mentality process and the IB Programme components.

We would like to thank parents for their time and efforts while collaborating with their children.

6th Grade students started the the unit of inquiry “PYP Presentation” and they have worked on different activities such as:

  • Understand what the presentation is about and what we expect from students
  • Highlight the main idea, concepts that will be used during the inquiry process
  • Brainstorming to present their concerns about the subject
  • Build lines of inquiry for the unit
  • Sort each student’s interests
  • Organize work teams by interests
  • Speakers talking about Pollution
  • Work experience through https://community.pearsoninternationalschools.com/
  • About endangered species
  • Each team has a Mentor to guide them and continuous evaluations are being conducted.

We keep working to expand our children’s desire to learn everyday.

IB DP Diploma Programme

MOK IB Exams

As requested and specified by the IB, since November 2017 our students from 12th grade started making their way towards their final exams in May 2018.

These past months have been a focus on academics, requiring organization and meeting the final details known as “Internal Assessment” in the 6 subjects students chose in Standard Level as well as Advanced Level.

Students were not alone through this process; teachers supported them in all their educational projects as well as their own parents

The 12th grade Students finished their MOK exams before vacations. These exams are IB structured and allow students to practice for the real exams that they will take in May. Just as in the previous process, teachers and students set up development teams with a high level of commitment which we both recognize and appreciate.

The Diploma Coordination is very grateful for the majority of efforts shown by students and teachers and we are sure that the results of May 2018 will be a good element of reflection to confirm our hard work and improve the preparation process in which El Camino has been officially committed for four years.

Good luck to all on their exams in May 2018.

Psychology

One of the activities conducted here at El Camino is the “Learning in family” workshop in both pre school and elementary. The objective is to provide parents with tools that will enhance the psycho-emotional development of a child.

In Elementary we had the “Quality Time” subject presented by our speakers and psychologists Ernesto A. Salcido and Annel Gonzales who are in charge of the Centro Psicoterapéutico Integral and offer multiple services in the area of psychological attention and counseling.

In pre school we talked about “Limits within home and coexistence” imparted by psychologist Wendy A. López who offers her professional services at CRECIENDO with children who have development issues.

We would like to thank parents and everyone who was part of these workshops. Here are some images.
