Gazette April 2016

A message from our General Director

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Colegio El Camino is engaged in an ongoing continuous improvement process, of which all parents are responsible for specific roles in the development of our students. Our School will be sending you an invitation to participate in the online survey between the dates of May 2nd to June 4th 2016 as one method of communicating your thoughts, suggestions and feelings with all stakeholders.

Surveys are a means to systematically engage all our stakeholders in a two-way communication. They provide school leaders and teachers a lens into the thinking and perceptions of our student’s parents. Careful analysis of the results enriches understanding of areas of strength and effectiveness as well as those areas that possibly need improvement. The survey results will enable our school leaders to measure parents’ and other community leaders’ attitudes and help target improvement strategies focused on student achievement as well as school effectiveness. Taking the survey will also help parents and the community understand the AdvancED Standards for Quality Schools and provide a means for learning about what a parent, student, or staff member should be looking for in a high quality school system such as ours.

Our last surveys were analyzed and resulted in many practices continuing in our school and other improvement initiatives being implemented.

Schoology, along with the results from MAP, CPAA and Lexium combined with the IB workshops were our response to your requests for ongoing and in depth reporting of your child´s progress.
The new kinder playground flooring, MAC computers, Elementary Playground, Library and Cafeteria were all infrastructure improvements in response to those surveys.

Your cooperation and support in completing the surveys will be greatly appreciated so we can continue to provide the high quality, vanguard educational services you have come to know at Colegio El Camino. Please be on the lookout for your survey invitation in the coming weeks!

As parents know good eating habits are important for preschoolers, as parents we often ask ourselves if we are providing an appropriate nutrition or we just run out of options to offer to our children. Here is a small article that you can use as an alternative option.

Usually a child in preschool age range should consume around 1,600 calories, 50% should be carbohydrates, 30% lipids and 18% protein. In the chart below you will see three different options for a healthy diet.

IB PYP Programme

IB PYP, my experience as a teacher

We want to share two experiences from our teachers who day by day live the PYP Programme challenge with students.

Both visions are product of changes and challenges experienced by each teacher and it goes to show their effort and commitment to the students.

Miss Cecilia Vazquez Cortés – 5th Grade English TeacherCecilia Vazquez

– What does the IB mean from a teacher´s point of view?
The IB is an educational Programme focused on developing intellectual, emotional, personal and social abilities, not only for students but also for teachers. Which means that everyday learning is applied to our personal life, family and work ethic.
– What aspects of your personal and professional life have changed after being introduced to the PYP?
The PYP has boosted me to develop research and social skills on a professional level, by collaborating with fellow teachers. Collaboration is the key and it makes a big difference, as opposed to other programs.

– A significant moment that I´ve lived with my students…
It´s definitely the time students inquired about the citizen´s rights and obligations, they realized that we all have rights but also not all of our rights are always considered by governments of different countries. As a result, students wondered why would this happen and why would citizens allow it?

– Do you see any changes in the student’s way of learning?
I noticed a gradual change, students show particular interest and try to learn more specifics about a subject, this drives them to inquire more and have an open mind.

– One of my challenges…
Filling out the learning logs on the PYP plan sheet and learning to work as a unit. I consider myself part of a team force.

– In relation to the profile´s attributes and attitudes I consider myself…
I inquire further and my curiosity always drives me to do more research. I need to work on strengthening cooperation.

– To my fellow teachers…
With the PYP learning is continuous, it requires oneself to share learning experiences and strengthen team work, tolerance and respect. Another aspect is that good communication not only lightens the work tasks, but also it gets done in a more effective and timely manner.

Miss Aima Sandez Abaroa – 3rd Grade Spanish TeacherAima Sandez

– What does the IB mean from a teacher´s point of view?
The IB is a new Programme that allows you to discover new teaching methods to share with your students.

– What aspects of your personal and professional life have changed after being introduced to the PYP?
The PYP allows me to discover new ways to teach students. As a PYP teacher I am also learning in a different way what I teach in the classroom.

– A significant moment that I´ve lived with my students…
When we first started we worked with the transdisciplinary subject “Who are we?” During planning we linked together the concept of human body systems to other systems like transportation, production, etc. When I presented graphic samples to the students I was amazed how easily they connected the dots realizing how a system implicates order.
With this Programme students create their own conclusions as a product of their learning experience.

– Do you see any changes in the student’s way of learning?
I notice that students try to research and discuss about a topic before asking questions. Besides, they relate what we are learning in our inquiry units to personal situations.

– One of my challenges…
Get the students to understand the central ideas of each unit of inquiry.

– In relation to the profile´s attributes and attitudes I consider myself…
I consider myself balanced, because I always try to include different aspects that will help benefit both me and my students. I feel confident that the PYP will help me become a better teacher.

– To my fellow teachers…
With the PYP you never stop learning.

We would like to thank and congratulate parents from Elementary for their valuable assistance to the progress reports meeting face to face with teachers, this gave parents guidance and strategies to develop their child´s abilities. These meetings and face time feedback is what we need to excel as a group.
